Banks Family

Greetings All!

This weeks blog post is all about the Banks Family! This Houston Family wanted to a more intimate setting, so we decided to do their family session in their home. Taking pictures in your home is more of a lifestyle session and allows you to be captured in your own environment where you and your family are most comfortable. The girls were super sweet and had blast...especially once the bubbles came out! You can see the amount of fun the girls were having by the huge smiles on their face. When I do family sessions I try to make them fun for the entire family. When small kids are involved I like to try and get their mind off the fact that I have a camera pointed at them and get them to be their true self. Nallely and Alfonzo Houston Engagement Session

Hello Everyone! I hope you guys are doing well. I've been making many changes to the business to give you guys a better experience. In between those changes I found a little time to put together a blog post about my recent trip to Houston and the lovely couple I was able to work with. I had the complete honor of taking the engagement portraits of a good friend of mine, Nallely and her fiance Alfonzo. Some of you may not know, but before San Antonio, I lived in Houston for about 6 years. Nallely was always gracious enough to let me try out new photography tricks and techniques before I adapted them into my business as a standard. She is the kind is customer photographers dream for! She is always open to new ideas that I may have and is willing to try something different. We still laugh about some of the things we have tried in the name of photography to this day. One time we were shooting in a parking garage on the 10th floor, the very top, and I suggested she sit right on the edge of the wall overlooking the downtown city street. She did look at me crazy for a second, but then leaped into action and hopped right up on the edge! If you were wondering, the shot came out great! Another great attribute about her from a customer standpoint is that she is great about sharing her images on Facebook and always tags me. Nothing makes a photographer happier than seeing their customer sharing the images on social media and letting their friends and family know how much they loved the images. Like they say "sharing is caring"! With all that being said, a few weeks back I posted that I would traveling to Houston for a weekend of photoshoots. Once she found out I was coming to Houston, I was immediately contacted to make sure I have time for her and her fiance to have an engagement session. I did anyone would do...I made sure they were well taken care of. We immediately started planning the session with times and locations. One great thing about being a photographer in Houston is the wonderful locations to choose from. I found some amazing spots near Minute Maid Park and Discovery Green. Anyone who has been to Houston knows how humid it can get in the summer time, so we started early to avoid that as much as we could. I've attached a few of my favorites from the session. Dominique Is 31!

Seems like just yesterday I was posting Dominique's 30th Birthday photoshoot. That shoot turned out so well we had to step it up a notch! If you haven't seen that one you can check out that post here. This year we took a trip down to Aruba and had an epic photoshoot. I really enjoyed this shoot for so many reasons. For one I got to photograph my wife in some of the most beautiful places and two it was a great vacation away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Now if you know my wife, she isn't usually fighting to get in front of the camera! I know you're probably wonder why not since she is gorgeous!?!? Well the world may never know the answer to that one! We were able to spread the shoot out over 3 days. The locations were just perfect. A house big enough for 12 people was involved along with a secluded bungalow and an empty beach. This was such a wonderful experience it might become an annual thing. Ikea Maternity

If you know me then you know one thing I do a good bit of is maternity sessions. This was even better because it was for my good friend Ikea. Ikea and I have been helping each other out with photography for over a year now. We crossed paths shortly after I relocated to San Antonio and we have been friends since. Her husband is also super laid back. They are truly a great family to know. When we planned her session we had a few hiccups of what to wear leading up to the session, but after a little persuading we got it all worked out. The outcome was simply amazing. The light was perfect and the colors just came to life. After it was all edited and posted this was another maternity session for the books! Camila

Camila turns the big ONE!!

A few weeks back had the pleasure of taking this little Princess' portraits for her first birthday! She didn't want much to do with taking pictures at first but after about 30 minutes we finally got her to loosen up! Camila was even rocking the custom shirt and tutu. Also, another cool thing about this session was that her mom actually made the cake that we used for the cake smash portion of the session. I really like cake so I had my eye on this cake thinking..Man I should sneak a piece! I let Camila enjoy her special day though! I really enjoyed her range of emotions. It really captures her. DJ Athenz

Did I ever tell you guys about the time I met one of the best DJ's in Houston? DJ Athenz is a top DJ in so many areas! She has worked with major brands and artists. She has an electric personality that will get the party on it's feet and jumping in no time. I was fortunate enough to cross paths with this talented soul in San Antonio. We were both working the RAW Artist Showcase and she came by my setup. I was doing a few headshots for artists before the show. She said she did a little modeling and wanted to get a few shots. I had a little down time so we set it up. Once I started shooting I knew she was on her A game and had done this before! I didn't have to guide her at all. San Antonio Raw Artist Showcase

A few months back I had the wonderful opportunity to be the lead photographer once again for the RAW Artist Showcase in San Antonio. It's always a wonderful event full of great artists from the San Antonio area and some even come from other states and cities to be apart. The showcase covers all types of arts. There are fashion designers, photographers, singers, makeup artists, hair stylists, painters, and many many more. I start the evening off with headshots for the artists followed by capturing the entire event. It's a real high passed event and I'm constantly moving around the show taking pictures. I wouldn't be able to do it all alone, so I enlisted the help of a great photographer friend to help me out. All in all the event is always a pleasure to be apart of and I always enjoy meeting all the wonderful artists who participate.I can't wait until the next event rolls around! Kyra O'Shea

Once a month I offer portfolio building sessions for models, bloggers, other photographers, makeup artist, and really any and everyone who would like to participate. In March I had the opportunity to work with San Antonio model Kyra O'Shea. She was a blast to work with and has a ton of personality. I had to capture those great freckles of course! She came to the session with a few different changes of clothes and was ready to get to work. We got some amazing images as the sun was setting. I really love the nice warm light and golden light that cuts through the trees. It really worked out nicely for the look we had going.

Damon's Baptism

Baptisms are both a spiritual and sacred event. It is a celebration of faith, life and hope for the future. Baptisms symbolize so much for the family and their relationship with God. I'm always honored to be able to capture these events for the family. It's something they will cherish for a lifetime to come. I was able to capture some images of the Baptism and even get some family photos after the event. Those who came out to witness this Baptism will always be apart of this special event. As a special bonus for this particular event there was also a marriage proposal that took place! I went from Baptism Photographer to Engagement Photographer! It was basically as perfect as one would imagine!!

Even though I'm in San Antonio, I do make the trip to Houston at least once a month to provide my photography services for those customers who would like to have me. Camden Newborn

It feels like it's been forever!! I'm finally getting back to the blog after taking a short break. To start the blog back up I'm picking up where I left off last year. Camden was by far the most alert newborn baby I've had in a long time. To think he was only about 5 or 6 days old...he was very aware of my wanting to take his portraits! With his father serving our country overseas I wanted to make sure we were able to get a shot of him on his Dad's uniform and also one in the super cool onsie that said "Man of the house until Daddy comes back home!" Cynthia Couple Session

Wow Everyone, it's been a while!

Now that the holidays are over and we have arrived in a new year, it's time to get back to the blogs! One thing I love about San Antonio is the beautiful locations. This couples session with Cynthia and her Husband was at The Historic Pearl. The Pearl is an old brewery that has a ton of romantic charm. It ended up raining a little bit before and during our session, but they were real troopers and we got some fun cool shots. Rain and romance just mesh so well together, wouldn't you agree?! Elisa's Breastfeeding Session

When a mother welcomes her newborn baby into this world, she is blessed with the ability to provide for them the only way a mother can. There are so many health benefits to breastfeeding a newborn baby that can't be replicated with formulas. Breast milk contains antibodies that help the baby fight off viruses and bacteria. Breastfeeding lowers the baby's risk of having asthma or allergies. Knowing that you are doing all this for your little bundle of joy creates a bond so strong between mother and baby it just give a natural glow! During Elisa's session you could just see and feel the loving bond she has with her daughter. Elisa is an advocate for normalizing breastfeeding. There are some who wish to not see mothers feeding their children in a natural way, but there are just as many, if not more, who are all for the right to be able to do so. Jessica and Shane Maternity Session

If you know me then you know I shoot more maternity sessions than any other type of session. I really love capturing the true joy and excitement on a soon to be parents face! San Antonio has some really nice locations for maternity sessions. I typically go for a nice natural light session, so it's easier to maneuver around. Shane and Jessica Eustis are 1st time parents expecting a baby boy. For their session we took advantage of some of the nice scenery at the McNay Art Museum here in San Antonio. Shane is in the Military and was being deployed soon, so we had to make sure he was apart of this wonderful time. We were able to get some great pictures of this great couple! I really enjoyed working with Shane and Jessica and can't wait until it's time for newborn pictures!! Jessica's Gender Reveal

Baby showers these days can be pretty routine and sometimes a drag. This gender reveal was a fun way to take the ordinary to the extraordinary!! No one knew the true gender except the event coordinator. She did a wonderful job planning the event and keeping it a secret from the Mom and Dad. I also must say, I've never met a mom who was so sure she was having a boy besides Jessica! She just knew it was a boy and no one could tell her any different. When her husband Ray hit the ball and it burst open and that large puff of blue smoke filled the air the crowd went wild. This was one of the best events I've had the opportunity to capture. RAW Artists Showcase

A few weeks back I was asked to be the lead photographer of the RAW Artist San Antonio Showcase. It was a wonderful experience and was located at the beautiful Aztec Theater. The showcase is a wonderful event for artists of all type to show off their skills. For me to be able to capture that was pretty cool! Over the course of 4 hours I hit every booth and capture the atmosphere of the event. There were painters, photographers, dancers, makeup artists, fashion designers, and music acts all participating. Rudy & Tonia Maternity

There is something special about bringing a life into this world. It is one thing I truly enjoy capturing with my camera. Rudy and Tonia Montez were great sports for this session. Maternity sessions in San Antonio can get a little hot during the summer months. Tonia had a beautiful gown for the session and it photographed really well. Since we were doing the session at Cibolo Nature Center in Beorne, I pulled my settee out for a few shots. Everything about this session was just great! I Was The Subject!

A few weeks back I spent the day showing my wife how to use my camera. I was totally cool with it since I've offered a few photography classes teaching others about their cameras. I taught her a few basics like focus points, exposure, depth of field, shutter speed, and aperture...all the good stuff. Then to put her to the test I played the subject! To say this was her first time using my camera and it was in full manual mode I think she did an amazing job. Check it out and make sure you give her a kudos for an awesome job!!

Dominique is 30!

It's not every year you turn 30! When you hit a milestone in life it should be documented with an amazing photoshoot. There were a couple of cool unique things about this photoshoot that don't usually happen. First, Dominique is my very own Wife and Second, Dominique made her own cake for this session. If that's not enough to get you excited then I don't know what will!! We didn't go with the typical cake smash session, but more of a cake eating session and pulled out a bottle of champagne! Sarah Hip Hop Dance Session

How is everyone making it out with this weather!?!? This past couple of weeks San Antonio has seen its fair share of heavy down pours. That's good for nature, but not so good for business. The Alamo City is finally drying out, so I can get back to capturing cool photo sessions and posting blogs.

This week I wanted to share some of the cool shots we got from a recent session. Sarah is a hip hop dancer here in the San Antonio area and also is an instructor at a dance academy. She brought her smooth moves and creative dances to the session and we knocked it out the park! We went for some cool backdrops for our session and got some awesome graffiti work. Adams Maternity

Hello Everyone!

I hope you guys are making it okay with this crazy weather that has been coming through San Antonio. This weather is making 2016 a year for the books! Aria's Cake Smash

I recently had the amazing honor of taking pictures of this little princess for her upcoming birthday. In addition to her smashing a cake, I also got a few pics of the entire family. It's always a fun time when cake is involved! I even wanted to get in and grab a piece!! The cake looked amazing and Aria really enjoyed herself. Amber's Maternity Session

KB Photography is back again with more beautiful maternity pictures. San Antonio has so many wonderful locations to choose from for maternity sessions. Each session is unique and catered to each client. Amber wanted a small maternity session with the kids and we came through! Her husband had to work so we missed having him with us. We chose the San Antonio Botanical Gardens which is a location with nice texture and pops of color throughout the entire property. This location provided a great backdrop for our session. Valeri's Maternity Session

There are a few things that I just love to photograph. One of them is maternity sessions. There is something magical about capturing the stages of pregnancy. I really love documenting this special time in a family's life. Some couples are at a huge milestone where they are becoming parents for the first time and others maybe having their last child. Either way, both are just as joyous! I really enjoy planning these sessions and creating something unique for each particular session. I talk with Mom and Dad to get an idea of what they like. That way we can include a good variety of fun and creative ideas. With Valeri's session we did a few creative things that I was very happy with. By her being a very artsy and creative person herself, I sent her the location and a few looks I had in mind and she said she knew exactly what to wear! What moms wear on a maternity session is extremely important, because it's all about the baby. So we really want to sale the whole baby bump! The Robles Family

Hunter Family

I recently had the great honor of capturing the family portraits of the Hunter family. They were an awesome family to work with. With 3 boys there was never a dull moment! We found a nice park here in San Antonio with a great deal of textures that we used as our backdrop. It gave us a very earthy feel. I always like to talk with the client before the session to see what they might like, so we can include that in the session. With 3 energetic boy and a little girl I knew this was going to be a fun shoot. Mom and Dad were genuinely great people and they are the kind of clients you remember! Ikea's Headshots

This week's blog is kind of special. It's special because it's not everyday I'm taking pictures of someone who shares a love for the craft of photography like I do. This weeks blog is about fellow San Antonio Photographer Ikea Moss. Ikea is the Owner and Photographer at Portraits by Ikea. She, unlike me, specializes in Children Photography and also has an enormous amount of skill in advanced photo editing. Ikea contacted me to see if I would be interested in taking a few headshots of her. I saw the opportunity as a great honor and accepted the job! I wanted to take this time to share a few of those shots we captured.

Photoshoot Class

We have finally made it to the last class! The last class was a full photoshoot. We talked about planning a session and what to look for in a location. Then we had 2 wonderful models for our class that helped the photographers frame up their shots and get some good practice in. The photographers in the class worked on posing their model so that it was pleasing for their attire and body type. I had the photogs pull in some of the previous class topics. We worked with natural light and artificial light and even played around with different apertures and shutter speeds. I was there to help anyone who may have had a question about something or maybe wanted to get my take on something. I didn't get much time to shoot much myself due to bouncing around to each photographers setup, but all in all everyone had fun, learned, and enjoyed themselves. I'll be starting up a new round of classes sometime next month, so if you are interested in attending be on the look out for the next round!!

Artificial Lighting

This week we brought out the lights! It was all about the 6 lighting styles that are most commonly used in photography. Those 6 lighting styles are Split, Loop, Rembrandt, Butterfly, Short, and Broad. Although, normally used in studio photography, we held the class outdoors in the San Antonio sun. It was not forgiving and made demonstrating some of the lighting a bit challenging at times. We over came that and we were able knock out all 6. Some of the more interesting lighting styles, like Rembrandt and Butterfly, are always good to add into portraiture photography. They make for a more dramatic shot. Rembrandt lighting takes it's name from the Dutch painter who used a particular style of lighting in his paintings. The lighting style is recognized by the triangle that forms under on of the eyes of the subject. Butterfly lighting also has a distinctive shadow that forms. You get a neat little shadow under the nose that resembles a butterfly. I didn't get a chance to do a quick session with this weeks model like the previous 2 classes, but I did get a few shots of some of the lighting styles. This Saturday will be the final class of this series. It will be a full photoshoot from start to finish. We will plan out shoot, pick our setting, pose the model, and shoot! It's open to any and everyone who wants to come on out and practice.

Focusing and Composition with Natural Light

This week we stepped it up a notch! As you may have seen in last weeks blog, we had a few photographers in San Antonio come out and get a solid foundation on camera fundamentals. This week we added to that by working on focusing and composing shots in the available natural light. We looked at the harsh light of the sun on a clear day and the different types of shade. We also covered light temperature from the cool blues of morning light to the warm golden light you see at sunset. I snapped a few shots of them using the 5 in 1 reflector. I really like the effect this has on images and how versatile it is. You get white for a soft cool subtle light, silver for a harder brighter white light, gold for that warm light , black help absorb or block light, and the diffuser panel to help create even soft light. i took some shots of this weeks model, Jasmine, using the 5-1 reflector and just the sun and shade. Understanding Digital Photography Class

KB Photography hosted its 1st class this past weekend! It was very exciting to get out with a few photographers from the San Antonio area. We covered camera basics such as ISO, Shutter, and Aperture. We looked at how important those 3 settings are to digital photography and how each impacts the image. We even went a little old school back to the film days and covered "The Sunny 16" Rule! This class was to get everyone ready for the next few classes. Next week we will be taking it up a notch and working on focusing and composition with natural light. I grabbed a few shots of the photographers playing around with their new found knowledge! I also grabbed a few shots our amazing model. Kids Photography

If there is one area I had to say I really truly enjoy, it would be kids. Having kids of my own, I know 1st hand how important it is to get those many milestones. Kids change so fast when they are growing up. One day they look and act one way and the next is totally different! Photography is one way to keep those moments forever. The next stages are 6 month milestone sessions, 1st birthday or cake smash session, birthday parties, and many more to keep up with many stages of their ever changing life! Newborn Photography

One of the most precious stages of life is the beginning of life. Capturing their innocence as they sleep, the little smirks on their faces, their itty bitty hands touching yours...These are moments you want to remember forever and KB Photography can give you just that. I truly enjoy going to the home of a new bundle of joy with everything needed to capture these precious moments. Newborn sessions can last up to 4 hours, but the number one priority is the comfort of the baby and parent. The key to getting amazing images is to work around the baby schedule and patience. Typically, newborn sessions are done within the first 14 days of life. Newborns at this age tend to sleep more which allows ease of posing. This is the 1st blog post for KB Photography. What better way to start it off than a look back at all the photoshoots from 2015! A lot has happened with KB Photography this year. From moving to branching out into other areas of photography.
